Rollyo Custom Search Engine

January 31st, 2006

Rollyo is what I believe is the solution to my problem sifting through bookmarks and the index/search feature I described I wanted to have on delicious.

Basically you enter the urls you want and it creates a custom search engine.

The downside as I see it is what it appears to only allow you to enter 25 urls, which is far to few to have all of my bookmarks. Now if someone could come up with a service that combined the features of Rollyo and Delicious, I’m in.

The 2.0 Mixing Bowl

January 30th, 2006

There is a lot of buzz about the development end of Web 2.0. A lot of applications are being released with APIs so that developers, outside of the companies, can build plugins or new components for their favorite applications. What a great idea! Take your product that you think is good, and then let the users have the ability to add on to it the features that they think would be either fun or useful.

Over at Programmable Web they have put together a a collection of what are being called mashups. The basis behind a mashup is a mixing of 1 or more Web 2.0 APIs to build something new. It seems like a simple enough concept to just start merging the functionality from application to application to really get them to do whatever you can dream of.

I highly recommend everyone go through the list of mashups over at Programmable Web and check out some of them. There is a lot of creative stuff being put together. Maybe mashups will be the push in the right direction towards a more open source world. Development between companies occurring in perfect harmony…okay maybe not. But they’re still fun to play with.

AJAX Amazon Search - My Big River

January 29th, 2006

My Big River let’s you search Amazon and instantly displays the results. Pretty cool, and if it takes off, the guy who made it should make a nice amount of affiliate commissions.

What I Would Like To See On: Del.icio.us

January 27th, 2006

This is a re-post from a comment I made here

I like delicious but to be honest I’m to lazy to tag, what would be nice is if it make an index based only on what I’ve bookmarked so I could do a search and it would check through those sites only but search like a regular search engine.

Cus really who wants to tag? I think it would be cool to have the social bookmarking but then if all my bookmarks would become indexed and easily searchable, well that would be fantastic.

As things are now, I bookmark things like crazy, but rarely do I actually go back to find something, it’s to much work.

Feed Butler

January 26th, 2006

Feed Butler, seems to be a mix of digg and an rss aggregator, right now the sites on the front page don’t particularly excite me thought. They are however in “Beta” so who knows maybe things will change in time when they get more users and feed in their system.

The Power of 37

January 25th, 2006

One of the big powerhouse application developers for the Web 2.0 era is 37 Signals. Powered by a skillful team of professionals and a lot of great ideas they really helped kick start the Web 2.0. 37 Signals has produced what I consider and excellent “suite” of applications that everyone should utilize, or at least try. For those who are not aware of 37 Signals I’ve comprised a brief review of all of the applications in their suite.

Ta-Da Lists
The simplest of ideas, but very well implemented. I know a lot of people who wish they had a to-do list that they could take with them no matter where they went. Ta-Da Lists provided them with this tool. Users are able to create and manage a number of to-do lists, or lists of any content. 37 Signals took the idea behind the old fashioned hand written to-do list and put that same functionality on the web. You are able to actively manage your lists right on the page and get so much more power than you ever could before from a to-do list.

Writeboards
A big part of Web 2.0 is online document publications. Writeboards provide users with a way to collaborate on developing documents and monitor the changes that are made. A number of users are allowed access to contribute to content of a document live on the web. This also removes the issue of cross platforms in a team environment because it takes full advantage of the web as a platform independent of the computer accessing it.

Backpack
Backpack started as a note-taking interface that let you make pages and notes on the web so you can always have access to them. But with excellent usability in mind they combined the lists from Ta-Da List and Writeboards into one package so that Backpack is really an illustration of a lot of the 37 Signals products. Bringing notes, lists, images, files, and writeboards all together in one interface for users of Backpack.

Basecamp
The flagship of the 37 Signals suite is their project management application, Basecamp. Basecamp utilizes all of the technologies of Web 2.0 in order to beef up what you would expect from a usual project management application. But again utilizing the web as a platform to avoid the issues of cross platform compatibility across a team. And, just like Backpack, Basecamp makes use of all of the functions from the other products in the suite in order to better assist users of Basecamp.

It’s amazing what the creative minds behind 37 Signals have put out for the Web 2.0 savvy people. I, personally, am very excited to see what else will come out of the 37 Signals camp in the near future as we progress with the development of web technologies.

Faux Feed Instant Feed Creator

January 24th, 2006

This is a service that I had made, it is actually going to be a support service for another much larger website I am working on, but I thought I might as well put it out there for others to use.

Quite simply with Faux Feed you can create RSS and ATOM feeds by just entering the data through a very simple admin. The site isn’t great looking but who cares your users will never see it.

I was kind of sad to see FeedXS launch a few days ago theirs is probably better than mine, which is why I wish I had beaten them to the punch and I could have but my original programmer backed out almost a month into the project.

Anyways for what it’s worth, check out Faux Feed

Google News Leaves Beta

January 24th, 2006

If you’ve been holding your breath for Google News to leave beta before you jump on board it is finally time. Well okay I certainly hope there is no one that didn’t use it for fear of the beta, but I’m willing to get it turned some users off.

Quite frankly I think I’ll use Google News less now, it doesn’t have that the same hardcoreness. Because when I was using it in beta, I was living on the edge, anything could have gone wrong…

Okay I get it, the fact that it was in Beta really seemed to mean absolutely nothing, I still do wonder if being out of Beta will draw more people.

For more read the post on google’s blog.

Web 2.0 Validator

January 23rd, 2006

With all the latest craze of the Web 2.0 era of the internet you may be curious to see who is really owning up to all that they claim. Now this may be hard to tell just from looking at sites, because it is easy enough to make things look 2.0. Now there is a new way to find out if someone is really using Web 2.0 technologies. Also, a nice added feature of the validator is it will not only check if the page is in fact using Web 2.0 technologies but it will also check if there are valid technologies.

Instant Domain Search

January 21st, 2006

Well if you’re like me and always looking for new domains, you will really appreciate this tool.

Check out Instant Domain Search

This site is designed to help you find the right domain name. We don’t offer machine generated suggestions because we think that people can outperform a computer when using good tools.

The search is ridiculously fast, and so easy to check domains.

It’s too bad they don’t give suggestions, my guess it not that that that they really do thing people can outperform a computer but rather that would have been another large amount of coding.

As a testament to how cool I think this tool is I have actually put it as one of my quick links tool bar (if that what they’re called), well anyways I will visit that site often.
