Instant Domain Search

January 21st, 2006

Well if you’re like me and always looking for new domains, you will really appreciate this tool.

Check out Instant Domain Search

This site is designed to help you find the right domain name. We don’t offer machine generated suggestions because we think that people can outperform a computer when using good tools.

The search is ridiculously fast, and so easy to check domains.

It’s too bad they don’t give suggestions, my guess it not that that that they really do thing people can outperform a computer but rather that would have been another large amount of coding.

As a testament to how cool I think this tool is I have actually put it as one of my quick links tool bar (if that what they’re called), well anyways I will visit that site often.

Good Storm Delays

January 12th, 2006

Update: Store Up

I wrote about this company a few days ago, and I emailed them see the progress of setting my store up, as it has been almost two weeks since I sent in my designs.

Well I got a prompt reply within the hour which is pretty good especially considering its 8pm (pacific).

I’m really sorry about the delay. We’re just getting up and running, as you can see, and there’s been a little backlog. We’re plowing through them now, and I’ll check in to see where yours are.

I’ll let you know as soon as I know something. Again, I apologize.

Okay fair enough. It’s just I really would like to get my store up and see if anybody with buy my cartoon shirts (buriedunderair.com).

The backlog of course makes sense, as one would expect there are probably tons of cafe-press store owners who are trying to move their stuff over.

This just reinforces my feeling that there really should be a user interface to add t-shirts, they could even moderate the user additions if they want. I think the cost of such a system would have already been covered by the time saved.

Don’t Forget About Google Sets

January 12th, 2006

I would like to take this chance to remind the world of all the cool stuff that is still sitting at Google Labs.

One of my favorites is google sets, it’s simple clean, and what’s that, doesn’t use AJAX.

I’ve used this numerous times, and found it most useful for making word searches all you need to do is pick a topic give it a few words and it generates the list on that topic. To be honest actually I’m yet to find another use for it other than creating word searches.

Aj Chat Alpha

January 11th, 2006

Did you know programs still have Alpha phases, and here I was thinking everything only had a Beta phase. I don’t remember using an alpha program since icq2000a.

As far as I can tell AJ Chat is a simple web chat tool that you can embed on your site, essentially it’s an ajax irc client.

I mean it’s cool yeah but whatever, there are applets out there already doing this well enough, I want to see people do new things with AJAX not just regurgitate old things and write them in AJAX (well sometimes cool stuff comes out of doing that, but with this I don’t see too much added value).

AJAX Translator

January 11th, 2006

AJAX Trans will translate as you type which is pretty cool. The major downside of this as far as I can tell is that since it translates as you type it would be doing it word for word, without any real logic. This will make for some pretty cryptic translations.

Still a tool like this would be especially cool to have on a mobile device while travelling.

iLife - iWeb

January 10th, 2006

Leave it to Apple to bring publishing to the masses. Okay not like their to first to do so but when they do something people pay close attention.

With the release of iWeb Mac users, gets templates, ease of use, blogging and podcasting. All cool stuff, the best part is that’s its an offline client.

Yeah yeah yeah, Web 2.0 is all about programs running from the browser but I for one really like certain things on my desktop, I hate waiting for things to load when using a web based CMS.

This is an excellent addition to the iLife suite.

Dont Let FeedBurner Burn You

January 10th, 2006

I’ve always worried that at some point in time FeedBurner with burn me, sure they have great tracking but what about the fact that we have to give up control to them (users subscribe to the feedburner url).

Well this is my solution and it is an expansion of the origional idea of freeburner themselves gave us.

Just instead of switching it over permanently it’s done in batches for for example:

If my current rss feed is rss.php I would copy it and create rss2.php I would then go and change this to be the rss link on my website/blog. Feedburner would then track the users subscribed to rss.php but theses subscribers would still be subscribed to my url so I have control. New subscribers would subscribe to rss2.php (not the feedburner url as they would suggest).

Now say a month has passed and I want to know how many subscribers I have simple I copy rss2.php and make rss3.php then redirect rss2.php to feedburner.

After doing it twice my .htaccess would look like this
Redirect temp /wp-rss.php http://feeds.feedburner.com/worlddominationplans
Redirect temp /wp-rss2.php http://feeds.feedburner.com/worlddominationplans

Sure it’s complicated and ugly but at the cost of control I’ll take it.

BackBase Speeds AJAX Development

January 8th, 2006

While this isn’t as fast as the web 2.0 creator below this is still an interesting piece of software, and they say you can have an AJAX website in 12minutes (according to the video on the homepage)

This pretty much sums up what BackBase is:

“The Backbase architecture takes care of all the Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and AJAX plumbing functions, enabling developers to concentrate on business requirements. Backbase helps you maximize the productivity of all your developers—from novice to expert—through approachable tools, pre-built templates and interface controls, and rapid server- and client-side scripting languages. Backbase offers advanced developer tooling, including plug-ins for Eclipse, Dreamweaver and .NET Studio. In many cases the use of Backbase software has resulted in over 50% reduction in application development time.”

I like the idea of this because myself I don’t yet understand AJAX (in terms of actually editing the code, but maybe that’s partly because it in itself isn’t actually a language) so anybody that wants to make it simpler is good by me.

Web 2.0 Creator

January 8th, 2006

Why go through all the work of inventing your own product when you can have this nifty tool do it for you.

Just visit the Web Two Point Oh! Generator and get a product and business name generated for you, much easier than staying up all night writing ideas on napkins.

Good Storm

January 5th, 2006

While I can’t say these guys have the best software setup or make things run seamlessly there is something they did right, and that is share more with the users.

Good Storm give their users 70% of the revenues, which is much better than the alternative of Cafe-Press.

It is however really disappointing how un-streamlined their website is, you need to email them files and have them manually set your store up for one. I don’t know, it just seems to me that for a few grand in coding they could have had a much better product.

Conceptually I love that they are giving their users a much bigger cut, so hopefully we see good things coming from this storm (okay, sorry bout that)
